Ohio State’s men’s basketball team will begin and end the Big Ten schedule at home as it tries to win at least a share of its sixth conference title in nine years under coach Thad Matta.
The 31-game 2012-13 schedule was announced yesterday. It has the Buckeyes opening their conference schedule on Jan. 2 against Nebraska and closing March 10 against Illinois, where former Matta assistant John Groce will be in his first season as coach.
In between the two games, the Buckeyes will play each of their projected competitors for the Big Ten title twice: Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin. They must play three of the four on the road during the second half of the conference season.
Ohio State will play four teams once in the 18-game conference schedule: Iowa and Minnesota at home, and Penn State and Purdue on the road.
The nonconference schedule is highlighted by games against three teams that finished with Ohio State in the top 10 of the Rating Percentage Index last season: Kansas, Duke and Marquette.
The Buckeyes will open the season on Nov. 9 against Marquette in the Carrier Classic aboard the USS Yorktown, a retired aircraft carrier docked at Charleston, S.C.
The game at Duke is a rematch of last year’s ACC-Big Ten Challenge game that Ohio State won 85-63.
Kansas, which beat the Buckeyes twice last season, including in the Final Four, visits Value City Arena on Dec.22.
Two other home games in December also are against opponents that reached the NCAA Tournament last season: Long Beach State and North Carolina-Asheville.
Starting times and TV networks not already listed will be announced later.
