MSU men's basketball: Spartans' schedule tough again

EAST LANSING — Michigan State's nonleague schedule includes Kansas, Connecticut, Texas and a trip to Miami (Fla.). The Big Ten schedule includes two games each against top contenders Indiana, Michigan and Ohio State — with just one game apiece against Penn State, Northwestern, Iowa and Illinois.
And the Spartans will play in Germany, Jenison Fieldhouse and at Bowling Green.
So it’s a typical men’s basketball schedule for the Spartans. Difficult, eventful and creative.
MSU released the schedule Thursday, in tandem with the Big Ten releasing its entire schedule. Dates and TV assignments for the Big Ten games are still to be announced.
MSU starts with two home exhibitions: Oct. 30 against Northwood (Fla.) and Nov. 2 against St. Cloud State. Then it’s off to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, for the Nov. 9 season opener against Connecticut.
And four days after that, the Spartans take on Kansas in the Champions Classic in Atlanta.
The next nonleague highlight is a Nov. 28 trip to Miami to take on the Hurricanes in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Spartans will play in Jenison for the first time since 1989 on Dec. 15, against Tuskegee, to honor the 50th anniversary of a 1963 NCAA tournament game at Jenison in which Mississippi State took on Loyola (Chicago) after sneaking out of its state in defiance of a law that prohibited it from playing racially integrated teams.
The day before that game, MSU will hold an alumni game at Jenison, with several basketball luminaries expected to take part.
MSU goes to Bowling Green on Dec. 18, then wraps up the nonleague season by welcoming Texas to the Breslin Center on Dec. 22.
The Big Ten opens at Minnesota on Dec. 31 and finishes at home against Northwestern on March 10. That’s the only meeting against the Wildcats, as the Spartans once again got rough treatment from the Big Ten scheduling computer.
MSU doesn’t play U-M until hosting the Wolverines on Feb. 12. The Spartans visit Ann Arbor on March 2 or 3.
MSU travels to Indiana on Jan. 27 and hosts the Hoosiers on Feb. 19. MSU welcomes Ohio State to Breslin on Jan. 19 and returns the trip Feb. 24.
