Strasburg will make 2-3 starts before end

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson saysStephen Strasburg probably has two or three starts remaining before the ace is shut down for the season. Johnson said yesterday he delivered the news to Strasburg on the plane ride home from Wednesday’s win over the Miami Marlins. Johnson says he has a “pretty firm plan” for Strasburg, but it’s based on how many innings the right-hander pitches in his next starts. Strasburg is 15-6 and has thrown 150-1/3 innings. The Nationals have not announced the innings limit they’ve imposed on him in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Roger Clemens plans to make a second start for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League on Sept. 7. His agent, Randy Hendricks, said in an email that it’s his understanding that Clemens will pitch again for the Skeeters against the Long Island Ducks.

NHL awaiting counteroffer from players

The NHL’s collective bargaining talks were put on hold until today. Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players’ Association, had originally said he was optimistic the union would make a counterproposal yesterday. Fehr could extend a counteroffer today at the NHL’s New York office. The current agreement expires Sept. 15, when the league has said it will lock out the players if a new deal is not in place. The two sides are at odds over hockey-related revenue. The league wants to knock down the players’ percentage to 46. The players’ share was 57 percent last season.

The Oilers signed forward Jordan Eberle to a six-year, $36 million contract extension. The move comes a little over a week after the Oilers signed forward Taylor Hall, Eberle’s roommate, to a seven-year, $42 million extension.

Big East hopes to add 14th football team

New Big East Commissioner Mike Aresco said the conference wants to add a 14th member for football, and is planning to have a championship game after next season. Aresco spoke with reporters before Connecticut’s football game with Massachusetts. Aresco declined to say which teams the Big East is pursuing. He also said he’s confident the teams currently committed to the Big East, including Connecticut, will stay. The Big East, which lost West Virginia to the Big 12, and will lose Syracuse and Pitt to the ACC next season, will span four time zones starting next season with the addition of schools such as Boise State.
