After last weeks season opener saw the defense give up 45 points to a strong Emory and Henry team, I had no doubt that there would be improvements this week. With what amounted to a tune up on an engine, the defense came out hitting on all cylinders, and was as effective as a can of Raid on the Hornets.
After a scoreless first half, Ferrum's defense maintained their intensity, and only gave up one touchdown.
Ferrum only gave up 46 yards through the air, and had two interceptions. Shenandoah gained 116 yards on the ground, and got their only touchdown by rushing.
This was a huge improvement, but this week, it was the offense that seemed anemic
There seems to be a bit of tweaking needed to get the offense where it needs to be. Given all of the personnel changes, it does not surprise me that the offense is still finding its footing.
The Panthers did not play a perfect game, but they won. This was an important step, and puts them in a position to be 2-1 headed into conference play. 2-1, if they can defeat the NAIA Southern Virginia University Knights. This team defeated Ferrum in their last meeting, and outpaced North Carolina Wesleyan yesterday 24-14. This will not be a guaranteed win, but Ferrum, if they can get all elements of their football machine in sync, they can defeat SVU. If not, it could be a long day.
Go Panthers!
