The 2012 college football season is just around the corner. Before the season starts, let us look back at the 25 greatest football players in Auburn Tigers history. Since Auburn has had so many great players, I decided that each player had to have been named an All-American in order to be considered for this list.
Here is my list in alphabetical order:
Terry Beasley, WR: A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Beasley was the favoritetarget of Pat Sullivan in the early 1970s.
Aundray Bruce, LB: A defensive standout on Tiger teams of the mid-1980s, Bruce went on to be the first pick in the 1988 NFL Draft.
Jackie Burkett, C: Burkett was a member of the 1957 national championship team. He was also atwo-time All-American in 1958 and 1959.
Gregg, Carr, LB: Carr was Auburn's leading tackler for three seasons in the early 1980s. He was a consensus All-American in 1984.
Karlos Dansby, LB: Dansby was great linebacker for the Auburn teams of the early 2000s. He is currently in the NFL.
Ed Dyas, FB/K: Ed Dyas did a little bit of everything for the Auburn team of 1960. He played fullback, linebacker and was a standout kicker. Dyas is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
Nick Fairley, DT: Fairley was a defensive terror on the 2010 national championship team. He won the Lombardi Award that year and is currently with the Detroit Lions of the NFL.
Tucker Frederickson, RB: Tucker Frederickson was a consensus All-American for Auburn in 1964. He was the first overall draft pick by the NFL's New York Giants in 1965. He was later elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Brent Fullwood, RB: Fullwood stepped out of Bo Jackson's long shadow to become an All-American in 1986.
Walter Gilbert, C: Walter Gilbert was an All-American in 1934, 1935 and 1936. He is the only Auburn player to be a three-time All-American. Gilbert is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
Ben Grubbs, G: Grubbs was an All-American in 2006. He was a member of the AFC Pro Bowl team in 2011.
Jimmy Hitchcock, End: Jimmy Hitchcock became Auburn's first All-American in 1932. He was also elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Bo Jackson, RB: What more can be said about Bo Jackson? He won the Heisman Trophy in 1985, is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and was the greatest athlete that I ever saw.
Ed King, NG: King was a two-time All-American at Auburn at the end of the 1980s and went on to a career in the NFL.
Marcus McNeill, T: McNeill was also a two-time All-American at Auburn. He is currently in the NFL.
Cam Newton, QB: Newton won the Heisman Trophy in 2010 while leading the Tigers to the National Championship. It was likely the greatest single season performance in Auburn history.
Jimmy Phillips, End: Phillips was a leader on Auburn's 1957 national championship squad. After leaving Auburn, Phillips enjoyed a successful career in the NFL.
Ken Rice, T: Ken Rice was a consensus All-American in 1960. Drafted by both the NFL and the rival AFL, Rice chose to play in the AFL and enjoyed a brief professional career.
Tracy Rocker, DT: Tracy Rocker was Auburn's first Lombardi Award winner. He dominated SEC offenses in the late 1980s and was later elected to the College fFotball Hall of Fame.
Carlos Rogers, DB: Rogers was a leader on the undefeated Tigers squad of 2004. Rogers is the only Auburn player to win the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back. He is currently in the NFL.
Frank Sanders, WR: Sanders was a standout receiver for the Auburn teams of the early 1990s. He later enjoyed a successful NFL career.
Zeke Smith, G: A leader of Auburn's 1957 national championship team, Zeke Smith won the Outland Trophy and later played in the NFL.
Pat Sullivan, QB: A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Pat Sullivan became the first Auburn player to win the Heisman Trophy in 1971.
Carnell Williams, RB: Williams was a star for the undefeated Auburn team of 2004. He was drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Lee Ziemba, T: Ziemba was the anchor for the offensive line on the Auburn 2010 national championship squad. He is currently in the NFL.
