Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant put his foot down on the constant trade rumours surrounding power forward Pau Gasol. While playing with Team USA ahead of the London Olympics, Bryant said that as long as he's with the Lakers, Gasol will be too, according to Brian Mahoney of the Associated Press.
"As long as I'm there, he's going to be there," Bryant told a Spanish reporter, regarding Gasol's future with the Lakers. This is the best assurance Gasol could receive, as there has been little word (publicly) from the Lakers on Gasol's future with the team.
Gasol, 32, has thrived since joining the Lakers in the 2007-08 season. In 65 games last season Gasol averaged 17.4 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
Gasol's name has ceased to disappear from trade talks in recent years, despite the fact that the Lakers made three straight NBA Finals trips from 2008-2010, winning two.
Bryant, who has discussed retiring at 35, has two years left on his contract with the Lakers. So, Gasol can take some comfort in knowing that Bryant wants him around.
