Sports minister calls for Jones apology 26-07-2012

Australia's Sports Minister Kate Lundy has called for an apology to Leisel Jones for criticism of her physical appearance just days out from the swimmer's record fourth Olympic Games. Jones' physical physique has been the subject of media scrutiny since a series of unflattering photos emerged of the swimmer training ahead of the London Games. Olympic Boss Nick Green has echoed the chorus of support for the swimmer, labeling questions of her fitness 'disgraceful.' 'I'm disappointed with the article and I think they're extremely unfair on Leisel Jones and the work she's done for this country at this level,' said Green 'She's a triple Olympic gold medallist and a winner of eight medals for this country, I think she deserves a lot more respect than she's been given. 'It's just unfair she's been targeted this way on the eve of an historic fourth Olympic Games.' The 26-year-old returned to the pool on Wednesday and Australian Swimming Coach Leigh Nugent insists Jones has remained relatively unfazed by the media scrutiny. 'I suppose people are going to have their opinions about her but she's here for the fourth time,' Nugent said. 'I think it's a massive achievement to do that and obviously if it was easy for a swimmer we would have had them do that prior to this.' more read here
