The football season is flying by, and we are nearly a third of the way through the season. After five brutal games, the injuries are starting to pile up. Fantasy owners feel these affects along with NFL owners and coaches.
Bye weeks have also started. Perhaps you have Drew Brees, who is on a bye this week? Don't leave this spot empty. Go to your bench or free agency to fill that void as much as possible. Perhaps Christian Ponder is available going against a Washington Redskins defense with many holes?
This segment is to remind and encourage all fantasy participants to monitor your lineups closely regarding injuries, performances, and bye weeks going forward so that you can get the most points out of your starting roster. Many of you may wait until Thursday when the report comes out listing players as "Out," "Doubtful," "Questionable," or "Probable."
My advice is to start working on your lineups immediately after the previous week's game. Research the week's performance for everyplayer on your roster. This will update you on the health status and the performance trends of each player. If your team is hit with some injuries or poor performances, start looking for a backup plan immediately. Go ahead and pick up a free agent if you don't have a solid performer in that position on your bench. If you wait until Sunday just before the game, chances are that there will be fewer free agents with performance value available.
Various bench sizes -- depending on league format -- will impact the flexibility to play the free-agent game. If you have a small bench, it will reduce flexibility but not importance. It is extremely important to constantly refresh your lineup. Loyalty to under-performers will cost you wins. It does not matter if a player was a high draft pick or has been a fantasy stud in previous years. If he is not scoring points, bench him; if he still isn't scoring points, cut the cord and release him. The odds are that there is a much better option in free agency.
Maintaining a complete starting lineup for each week gives you the best chance to win. Equally important, it increases the quality of your fantasy league. Fantasy football is a great experience and lots of fun. Part of the rewarding aspect of fantasy football is the time and effort that it takes to win consistently.
Be a winner. Be consistent. Do your homework and put together a starting lineup each week that statistically gives you the best chance to win.
